About Koh Chang

Koh Chang Information

Koh Chang at a glance

Koh Chang is the third biggest island in Thailand and still remains an unspoiled beach with lush nature and the perfect gateway from the crowded islands like Samui and Phuket. Located in the Mu Koh Chang National Park, this island enjoys rich flora and fauna. This charming island has been slowly developed due to its returning tourists. Koh Chang provides accommodations that suit everyone and many things to do like trekking, yoga, kayaking and even beach parties!

The island sits in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border, in Trat province. Because it lies on the eastern seaboard rather than in the south, it is reached overland from Bangkok and the eastern coast, then by a short crossing to the island itself.

How to get to Koh Chang

Travel to Koh Chang is a combined land-and-sea journey. Most travellers cover the mainland leg by road to the Trat coast, then take a ferry across to the island. On this site there are currently 12 routes bookable routes serving the island, so you can compare the options side by side before you commit.

Tickets start from ฿600, and prices, departure times and journey durations are shown live on each route page at the moment you search — they change with the season and the operator, so it is worth checking the exact date you plan to travel.

Combined tickets and transfers

Where a single operator handles both the road and the sea legs, the whole trip can be booked as one ticket. That means one confirmation, one check-in and no need to re-book at the pier. When you search, the results page shows which services are through-tickets and which are separate legs.

Ports and departure points

The mainland gateway for Koh Chang is the Trat coastline, where the piers face the island across a narrow stretch of water. Arrivals on the island are on its eastern side, from which taxis and shared songthaews run to the west-coast beaches where most accommodation is found.

Ferries also link Koh Chang onward to the smaller islands of the archipelago, so the island works well as a first stop rather than a final destination.

Please note: the booking system does not currently list the specific pier names for this destination on our side, so check the pier stated on your ticket after booking, and allow time to reach it.

Popular routes to and from Koh Chang

The island connects to the following places through the routes bookable here:

  • Bangkok to Koh Chang — the busiest approach, combining the long overland leg from the capital with the ferry crossing. See the Bangkok travel and departures guide for onward connections.
  • Pattaya to Koh Chang — a useful link for travellers already on the eastern seaboard who want to continue along the coast. Details are on the Pattaya routes and transfers page.
  • Koh Chang to Koh Mak — the short island-hop deeper into the archipelago, popular with travellers heading for quieter beaches. Read more on the Koh Mak island guide.

All of these run in both directions, so the same pairs can be used to leave the island as well as reach it.

Operators serving Koh Chang

Operators on these routes include Boonsiri High Speed Ferries and Seudamgo, and Boonsiri High Speed Ferries is among the companies serving the island. Each operator sets its own timetable, baggage rules and cancellation conditions, and these are shown on the individual service before you pay. Compare the departure times as well as the fare — the earliest service is not always the cheapest, and the cheapest is not always the fastest.

Practical travel information

  • Book ahead in high season. Thai and international holidays fill sailings quickly, particularly on the Bangkok connection.
  • Allow buffer time between legs. If you have booked the road and sea portions separately, leave a margin — a delayed bus does not hold the boat.
  • Bring ID. Operators may ask for a passport or ID card at check-in, and the name on your ticket should match it.
  • Crossings depend on weather. Sea conditions can alter or cancel departures, especially outside the dry season. Keep your onward plans flexible on travel days.
  • Getting around the island. There is no rail or metro on Koh Chang; shared songthaews, motorbike rental and private transfers cover the coast road.
  • National park fees. Koh Chang lies within Mu Koh Chang National Park, and some viewpoints, waterfalls and trails charge an entrance fee on arrival, paid separately from your ticket.

What to see and do

The west coast holds the main beaches and most of the accommodation, while the interior is forested and mountainous — the setting for the trekking the island is known for. Waterfalls in the national park are a common half-day trip, and the surrounding waters are used for kayaking and snorkelling.

Quieter southern and eastern parts of the island keep the slower pace that draws returning visitors, and the smaller neighbouring islands are close enough to visit on their own trip. Between them, the island covers both ends of the scale: yoga and empty sand at one, beach parties at the other.

The Beaches

The beaches in Koh Chang aren’t as pristine in comparison with Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi, however, they are great for beach and water activities and excellent to share with family or by yourself. For those travelers who are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the waves, White Sand Beach and Long Beach are the perfect settings but for a lively atmosphere, Lonely Beach is ideal for parties and cheap prices making it popular among backpackers. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the tourist seasons ?

Phuket

Phuket really just has two seasons, which are known as "high season" and "low season" (or "green season"). During the low season months (May–September), boat numbers are reduced. During the high season (October–April), boats to the surrounding islands are increased so you will have some more options.

Koh Samui

There are three distinct weather seasons on the tropical island of Koh Samui: the dry season (December until February), the hot season (March until August) and the rainy season (September until November).

How do I unlock my account now?

Wait, and try again. Every lock lifts on its own — a minute the first time, and never more than an hour however many attempts have failed. There is nothing to click and nobody to contact.

If you have forgotten your password, do not keep guessing: each wrong attempt makes the next wait longer. Use Forgot password instead. Resetting your password gets you straight back in.

What is the difference between a locked and a blocked account?

Locked is automatic and temporary. It happens after repeated failed sign-in attempts and it lifts by itself — within a minute in most cases.

Blocked is a decision made by our team, and it does not lift on its own. If your account is blocked you will need to contact us; waiting will not change it, and neither will resetting your password.

If you are not sure which applies to you, get in touch and we will tell you.

How long am I locked out for?

The first lock is one minute. If sign-in keeps failing after that, each further lock lasts longer:

  • 1st lock — 1 minute
  • 2nd lock — 5 minutes
  • 3rd lock — 15 minutes
  • 4th lock and after — 1 hour

An hour is the longest you will ever be locked out. You get five attempts before the first lock, and as soon as you sign in successfully everything resets — the next time you mistype, you start again at one minute.

My account locked but I never tried to sign in

Then someone else was trying to sign in as you, and the lock did its job — it stopped them.

Your account is safe: a lock means the attempts failed. Nobody got in. You do not have to do anything, and the lock will lift on its own.

We would still recommend two things:

  • Change your password, especially if you use the same one on another website.
  • Add an authenticator app in your account security settings, so a password alone is never enough to sign in as you.

If you get these repeatedly, contact us and we will look into it.

Why is my account locked?

We lock an account for a short time after several failed sign-in attempts in a row. It is an automatic safety measure: it stops someone else guessing your password, and it happens whether or not the person typing was you.

You do not need to contact us. The lock lifts on its own — see How long am I locked out for?
